Assessment of Cryptophyceae ingestion by copepods using alloxanthin pigment: a caution ArchiMer
Antajan, Elvire; Gasparini, Stéphane.
The accessory pigment alloxanthin is a well-known taxonomic marker for Cryptophyceae in natural seawater. The use of alloxanthin to estimate in situ zooplankton grazing and selectivity on Cryptophyceae was studied using 2 dominant copepods of the southern North Sea, Temora longicornis and Centropages hamatus. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of water samples and of freshly caught copepods, starvation experiments, and feeding experiments (shipboard bottle-incubations) were carried out. Although alloxanthin was always detected in copepod extracts, (1) no correlation was found with alloxanthin in seawater, and (2) no significant grazing on Cryptophyceae was observed. Results of our gut-evacuation experiments showed that at least 78% of...

Biochemical survey of the polar head of plant glycosylinositolphosphoceramides unravels broad diversity ArchiMer
Cacas, Jean-luc; Bure, Corinne; Furt, Fabienne; Maalouf, Jean-paul; Badoc, Alain; Cluzet, Stéphanie; Schmitter, Jean-marie; Antajan, Elvire; Mongrand, Sébastien.
Although Glycosyl-Inositol-Phospho-Ceramides (GIPCs) are the main sphingolipids of plant tissues, they remain poorly characterized in term of structures. This lack of information, notably with regard to polar heads, currently hampers the understanding of GIPC functions in biological systems. This situation prompted us to undertake a large scale-analysis of plant GIPCs: 23 plant species chosen in various phylogenetic groups were surveyed for their total GIPC content. GIPCs were extracted and their polar heads were characterized by negative ion MALDI and ESI mass spectrometry. Our data shed light on an unexpected broad diversity of GIPC distributions within Plantae, and the occurrence of yet-unreported GIPC structures in green and red algae. In monocots,...

Comparison of traditional microscopy and digitized image analysis to identify and delineate pelagic fish egg spatial distribution ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie; Antajan, Elvire; Vaz, Sandrine.
One of the problems concerning studies of fish egg distribution is the weak spatial and temporal resolution due to the workload that examination of a large number of samples would demand. Recently, the development of a new laboratory imaging system, the ZooScan, capable of obtaining relatively good resolution images enables automated zooplankton identification using supervised learning algorithms. This new approach was applied to formalin-fixed fish egg samples collected during French winter IBTS (International Bottom Trawl Surveys) in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea. Fish egg spatial distributions of seven species based on the microscope and ZooScan identifications were compared. Abundance and distribution maps of winter-spawning...

Did the Indo-Pacific leptomedusa Lovenella assimilis (Browne, 1905) or Eucheilota menoni Kramp, 1959 invade northern European marine waters? Morphological and genetic approaches ArchiMer
Brylinski, Jean-michel; Li, Luen-luen; Vansteenbrugge, Lies; Antajan, Elvire; Hoffman, Stefan; Van Ginderdeuren, Karl; Vincent, Dorothee.
Hydromedusae, morphologically resembling the Indo-Pacific leptomedusa Lovenella assimilis (Browne, 1905) (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Lovenellidae), are reported for the first time in both the eastern English Channel and the southern bight of the North Sea. Analyses of past zooplankton samples from a long-term monitoring program suggest that this non-indigenous species has been present in the eastern English Channel at least since 2007. Genetic analyses identified specimens as Eucheilota menoni based on nearly identical 18S ribosomal RNA gene, mitochondrial cytochrome oxydase subunit gene I (COI) sequences, and 16S Ribosomal RNA gene. Consequently, published morphological descriptions of L. assimilis and E. menoni were compared, and their species status is...

Feeding strategy of Downs herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) in the English Channel and North Sea ArchiMer
Denis, Jeremy; Vallet, Carole; Courcot, Lucie; Lefebvre, Valerie; Caboche, Josselin; Antajan, Elvire; Marchal, Paul; Loots, Christophe.
This study aims to characterize the larval feeding strategy of the Downs sub-population of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus L.). Diet composition, vacuity rate and prey selectivity of larvae from 8 to 15 mm collected during the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) - MIK sampling from 2008 to 2013 were assessed by direct observation of their gut contents using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The high contribution of protists and small zooplanktonic prey observed in the gut contents proved the relevance of SEM to study the diet of first feeding larvae. The relatively low vacuity rate of 45% suggests that food may not be a limiting factor for Downs herring larvae in winter. These larvae appeared to be omnivorous and there was a clear shift in term...

First record of the Asian copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus Sato, 1913 (Copepoda: Calanoida: Pseudodiaptomidae) in the southern bight of the North Sea along the coast of France ArchiMer
Brylinski, Jean-michel; Antajan, Elvire; Raud, Thomas; Vincent, Dorothee.
The presence of the demersal Asian copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus is reported for the first time in the southern bight of the North Sea, in both Calais harbour and the coastal waters off Gravelines, France. This is the first record of P. marinus in the Atlantic Ocean sector and the North Sea area. The species was collected in January and October 2010, and in January, February and April 2011. The very low number of collected individuals (0.2 to 4.0 ind.m-3) and the capture of only two ovigerous females and of a few numbers of copepodid CV stages suggest that the species survives and actually reproduces in both sites but does not manage to develop an abundant population. The presence of P. marinus in Calais harbour and coastal waters of the southern...

No more reason for ignoring gelatinous zooplankton in ecosystem assessment and marine management: Concrete cost-effective methodology during routine fishery trawl surveys ArchiMer
Aubert, A.; Antajan, Elvire; Lynam, C.; Pitois, S.; Pliru, A.; Vaz, Sandrine; Thibault, D..
Gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores, and tunicates (appendicularians, pyrosomes, salps and doliolids), are often overlooked by scientific studies, ecosystem assessments and at a management level. Despite the important economic consequences that they can have on human activities and on the marine foodweb, arguments often related to the costs of monitoring or their coordination, or simply negligence, have resulted in the absence of relevant monitoring programs. A cost-effective protocol has been applied on trawling from existing fishery surveys conducted by national laboratories in England and France. The testing phase has successfully demonstrated the adequacy of such a tool to sample macro- and mega-zooplankton gelatinous organisms in...

Aim Invasive species are of increasing global concern. Nevertheless, the mechanisms driving further distribution after the initial establishment of non‐native species remain largely unresolved, especially in marine systems. Ocean currents can be a major driver governing range occupancy, but this has not been accounted for in most invasion ecology studies so far. We investigate how well initial establishment areas are interconnected to later occupancy regions to test for the potential role of ocean currents driving secondary spread dynamics in order to infer invasion corridors and the source–sink dynamics of a non‐native holoplanktonic biological probe species on a continental scale. Location Western Eurasia. Time period 1980s–2016. Major taxa studied ‘Comb...

Responses of calanoid copepods to changes in phytoplankton dominance in the diatom/Phaeocystis globosa dominated Belgium coastal waters ArchiMer
Antajan, Elvire.
Copepods feeding behaviour according to changes in composition and availability of their potential preys in Belgian coastal waters were appraised through the combination of different field experiment approaches. The gut fluorescence method was combined with egg production measurements to estimate the contribution of herbivory to the total ingestion required to sustain Temora longicornis' egg production. The results showed that during fall and winter herbivory was often sufficient to cover the nutritional needs of T. longicornis, while during spring and summer they needed heterotrophic food to meet their energetic demands for egg production. When T. longicornis carbon requirements for egg production increase the contribution of non-phytoplankton food...
